Bone Marrow Stem Cell Therapies

How Do Bone Marrow Stem Cells Work in the Body?

Today, many scientists and medical professionals are harnessing the power of regenerative medicine, which uses stem cells to repair and regrow tissues that have been damaged by injury, disease or the simple wear and tear of aging.

One of the best sources of stem cells is your own bone marrow. It’s possible to extract fluid, called bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) from within your bones. About 1 percent of this fluid is made up of progenitor, or mesenchymal, stem cells that have the ability to grow into new tendons, cartilage and bone. These stem cells also release natural chemicals that decrease inflammation while they regenerate tissue.

Why Use Stem Cells?

BMAC therapy may be an effective treatment for people who have osteoarthritis, spinal cord injuries, tendonitis, ligament tears, and sports or activity-related injuries that have worn down or torn the tissues in the joints or muscles.

In addition to regenerating specific tissues, stem cell therapy has been shown to have a systemwide effect throughout the body. This means that the body’s faulty immune response that contributed to the original tissue degeneration is often affected positively by the injection of these concentrated stem cells.

At the same time, using your own stem cells rather than those from another person eliminates the risk of an allergic response or rejection—and it goes without saying that the minimally invasive extraction of stem cells and noninvasive injection of them eliminates the possibility of complications that accompany surgery.
